Best furniture and TV anti-tip kits

Tip-overs send about 7,800 children a year to emergency rooms, so this guide helps you pick the straps and brackets that hold dressers and TVs to the wall, based on what lab tests found.

For a dresser or bookcase on wood studs, buy two Hangman anti-tip kits per piece and screw them into the studs. Retailers list every part as steel, and it appears to be the same kit as Home Depot's Simple Mount.1 2 The Simple Mount kit did best on wood studs in Consumer Reports' lab, averaging 347 pounds per anchor.3

If you have metal studs, or Hangman is sold out, buy the QuakeHOLD! 4160, which appears to be the strap that led the metal-stud test at 230 pounds per anchor.3 4 For a flat-screen TV on a stand, use the Safety 1st HS304 on wood studs only.5 6 7

Whatever you buy, get screws into studs, because the wall matters more than the brand. Of nine kits sold for hollow drywall, only three held 60 pounds.8 Skip plastic kits too, including any that came in the furniture box. CPSC has announced recalls or warnings for at least seven plastic or in-box kits since 2024.9 10 11 12 13 14 15

Hangman Anti-Tip Kit (400 lb steel cable)

Good fit if: dressers and bookcases on wood studs

Model TK-400 / TK400L

  • All steel, no plastic parts
  • Probably the top lab kit
  • Removable and reusable
  • Stock is patchy
  • 400 lb is a retailer claim
  • Short cable, one per kit
  • May mean drilling the furniture

Steel is the reason to choose it. Retailers list an aircraft-grade steel cable and all steel components, so it has none of the plastic behind the recent recalls.1 11 A bracket screws into a wall stud, and the cable ties the furniture to it.1 16 Hangman calls the kit TK-400 and retailers call it TK400L.16 17

The lab evidence is indirect. Home Depot sells a Simple Mount kit under the same TK400L number, and Simple Mount is a Hangman name.2 18 So this is probably the kit that averaged 347 pounds per anchor on wood studs.3 That link is our own inference, not something Consumer Reports states. Retailers rate the kit at 400 pounds, but Hangman's own page gives no rating, and no test we know of confirms that number.1 17

One owner's video is the only hands-on report. He chose it because every part is metal, needed a stud finder to fit it, and couldn't tip the dresser afterward.19 That's a first-day impression, though we found no reports of failure.

A few practical points before you order. Listings describe one cable, so plan on two kits per piece.1 The cable is short, so the furniture has to sit close to the wall.20 A distributor's install video has you drill a hole in the back of the furniture and calls for a top at least 5/8 inch thick.21 Stock is uneven too. Hangman's store shows it sold out and Beach Audio showed it out of stock, while Solid Signal listed it in stock.1 16 17

Verdict: Buy two of these for each heavy piece on wood studs. If you can't find it, take the Simple Mount kit at Home Depot after checking the model number, or the QuakeHOLD!.

Best for metal studs

QuakeHOLD! Furniture Strap

Good fit if: metal studs, or a stand-in when Hangman is sold out

Model 4160

  • Probably the top metal-stud kit
  • Also did well on wood studs
  • Two straps in the kit
  • Sold at big hardware stores
  • Adhesive end, aging unknown
  • One kit covers one large piece

This looks like the kit with the cleanest test record. Consumer Reports calls its winner QuakeHOLD! Furniture Securing Straps and gives no model number, so the link to the 4160 is our inference from the brand, the nylon straps and the stores.3 4 On metal studs behind drywall, where Consumer Reports found fewer good options, that kit resisted 230 pounds of force on one anchor and 460 on two. It also made the list of kits that did well on wood studs.5 Ace Hardware, Home Depot and Lowe's all sell it, so it should be easier to find than the Hangman.3

Each kit holds two 15-inch nylon straps, enough for one large item of furniture.4 One end peels and presses onto the furniture, and the other screws into a stud.4 Peel-and-stick kits tended to do worst in Consumer Reports' lab, and nobody has reported how this adhesive ages over the years, so press on it and tug the strap now and then.8

Verdict: Buy this if you have metal studs, or if you want a kit with a published result and easy availability. On wood studs with Hangman in stock, the steel kit is the stronger choice.

For a TV on wood studs, not metal studs

Safety 1st TV and Furniture Wall Straps

Good fit if: flat-screen TVs on stands, on wood-stud walls

Model HS304

  • Comes with TV brackets and bolts
  • 53-inch straps reach a distant stand
  • Did well on wood studs
  • Not for metal studs
  • One kit secures one item
  • Manual calls it only a deterrent

This is the only pick that ships with hardware for a TV: TV brackets, three sizes of TV bolts, wall and furniture brackets, and screws.7 The nylon straps are 53 inches long, so a stand can sit away from the wall.22 23 Consumer Reports named it among the kits that did well on wood studs.5

Don't use it on metal studs. Its wall bracket broke off in Consumer Reports' metal-stud test.6 The manual gives three setups, and the safe one for a TV on a stand is TV to wall, with both straps in studs.7 It says not to strap a TV to furniture unless that furniture is already anchored or built in, because that can make tipping more likely.7

One kit covers one item, because the manual requires both straps, and it advises adding 1 to 2 straps for furniture 4 feet or wider.7 The manual also warns that a child will eventually defeat the product and that it's no substitute for adult supervision.7

Verdict: Buy this to hold a flat-screen TV to wood studs. Skip it on metal studs, and use the Hangman for a heavy dresser.

How to choose

Do it before a child starts climbing

Tip-overs send an estimated 17,800 people a year to emergency departments, by CPSC staff's average for 2020 to 2022. Of those, 7,800 are children and 4,200 are adults 60 or older, so this isn't only a nursery job. CPSC counted 217 deaths from January 2013 through July 2023, and 155 were children. Of those deaths, 44% happened in bedrooms.24

In a peer-reviewed analysis of 19,045 emergency cases in children under 18 from 1990 to 2019, those under 6 made up 69.9% of patients, injuries peaked at age 2, and 47.0% involved the head or neck.25 Anchor the bedroom dresser and the TV first, and do it before a child starts pulling up. The same study notes that an anchor works only if it's installed correctly.25

Start with what's behind your drywall

Find a stud before you buy anything. Consumer Reports built 90 wall segments, tested 14 kits and found that results depend heavily on the wall.3 8 Over wood studs, several metal and nylon kits did well. Over metal studs there were fewer good choices.5 Screws in studs are what count, and regular drywall anchors can rip out.26 27

Don't trust a no-stud claim. Six of the nine kits that claimed to work in drywall without a stud failed to hold 60 pounds, the force Consumer Reports used to simulate a child's weight.8 For exposed brick or cement, Consumer Reports says to call a professional.3 If you rent, ask your landlord before you settle for a no-stud kit.

Replace anything plastic

Choose metal or nylon. Consumer Reports found both stronger than plastic parts, and peel-and-stick kits tended to do worst.8 Plastic kits have also broken in real homes. CPSC said Cranach's kits failed the ASTM F3096-23 standard, with at least 115 reports of breakage and six tip-overs among about 55,170 kits.10 4our Kiddies recalled about 253,500 kits after at least 150 breakage reports and three tip-overs.11 Millions of New Age kits packed with furniture were recalled because the plastic tie can become brittle.9

CPSC has also warned consumers to stop using KareKlub kits, and it lists recalls from School Specialty, American Bolt and Screw, and Sauder.12 13 14 15 Check the kit that came with your dresser now. If it's a plastic tie or plastic brackets, or it's named in a recall, stop relying on it, keep children away from the furniture until a new restraint is in, and look up the CPSC notice for a free replacement. The Cranach and 4our Kiddies remedy is a stainless steel kit, and Alliance4Safety handles the New Age kits.9 10 11

How many you need

Anchor every dresser, bookcase, shelving unit and TV, at two points at least. Consumer Reports found that two straps often more than doubled the force needed to break or pull out a kit.3 5 If your strap allows it, double-loop the tether, which it says doubles the anchor's strength.3 Check the package count, because some kits hold one anchor and others hold two.1 4

Make sure the furniture can hold a screw

The furniture end fails too. Thin backing panels won't hold a bracket, so screw into the solid top or a back brace on pieces with particle board or thin plywood backs.7 When you finish, tug firmly on the straps, as CPSC's Anchor It campaign advises.28

Treat the TV as its own job

Strap the TV to the wall, and never rely on a dresser to hold it. CPSC counted 54 deaths in which furniture and a TV fell together.24 If you can't anchor a TV, CPSC says to use a low, sturdy base and push the TV as far back as it will go.29

Read load ratings as claims

A 400-pound rating on a package is the seller's number. In the lab, the weakest kits named were Lomily at 77 pounds and Qdos Zero Screw at 63.5 CPSC tells buyers to look for compliance with ASTM F3096-23, the standard for these restraints.12 Treat that as a minimum. The test applies a 60-pound load to the restraint alone, built up over 2 to 15 seconds and held for 30, and it doesn't cover how the kit performs once installed.30 None of the maker pages for these picks mentions the standard, so ask the seller.4 17 31

Anchor newer furniture too

A federal rule on the stability of clothing storage units took effect September 1, 2023. It covers units such as dressers at least 27 inches tall, and it leaves out bookcases and entertainment furniture.24 32 So anchor bookcases and TV stands whatever their age. CPSC also advises anchoring clothing storage furniture no matter when it was made.29 Newer dressers should resist tipping better, but stable furniture and anchors work together, and one doesn't replace the other.25

Others we looked at

  • KidCo Furniture Strap (S142)Nothing says it's bad: it's nylon and has no recall. But KidCo gives no load rating, and we found no published test of it, while QuakeHOLD! costs only a little more and has a measured result.3 4 31 Its two straps also cover just one piece at the two anchors you should use, so it doesn't work as a cheap way to cover many pieces.3 31
  • Simple Mount Furniture Anti-Tip Kit (TK400L)Consumer Reports' top kit on wood studs at 347 pounds per anchor, sold at Home Depot.3 It's probably the Hangman under a store label, so if Hangman stock is thin, buy this and confirm the model number on the listing.2
  • Booda Brand Furniture AnchorsConsumer Reports calls it a good budget option, and it also did well on wood studs.5 8 We left it out because we found no maker spec sheet to confirm its parts or model number.
  • TIPNOT foam anchorAn adhesive foam kit that was the exception among no-stud kits in Consumer Reports' lab, so it may suit renters who can't drill.6 Nobody has reported how the adhesive ages, so use a stud if you can.
  • Hangman Television Anti-Tip Safety Kit (TV400)Hangman's actual TV kit, with two 13-inch steel cables. Hangman's store shows it sold out, and we found no test of it.33
  • Qdos Zero Screw and Lomily strapsThese were among the weakest kits Consumer Reports named. Skip them.5
  • 4our Kiddies, Cranach and KareKlub plastic kitsRecalled or under a CPSC stop-use warning. Don't buy them, and replace any you have.10 11 12

How we picked

We haven't tested these kits ourselves. Nobody has published a study showing how much a given kit reduces injuries in real homes, so these picks rest on one lab's 2024 pull tests, recall data and injury counts. A machine pull isn't the same as a falling dresser. Published figures cover only some kits, and most of the results here come from news reports of the Consumer Reports test, so we leave out numbers for Safety 1st, Booda and TIPNOT.

The link between Hangman and the Simple Mount kit is an inference from a model number and a brand name, and the link between the 4160 and Consumer Reports' QuakeHOLD! kit is an inference from the brand, the material and the stores. Retail stock is partly unconfirmed, so check before you count on a store. We have one first-day owner report for Hangman, none for QuakeHOLD! or Safety 1st, and no long-term data on any kit. CPSC's death counts for 2021 to 2023 are incomplete, and wall anchors don't apply to tables, the largest furniture type in child injuries. A check of CPSC's full recall listing on November 5, 2026 found no recall of the Hangman kit, the QuakeHOLD! strap, the Safety 1st HS304 or the KidCo S142.
