How we choose
New House Checklist is two things: checklists that tell you what to do in a new house, and buying guides for the things those checklists need. Here is how we make both.
The checklists
Every task comes from a primary source: fire-safety agencies for alarms and extinguishers, the EPA for radon and lead, federal regulators for mortgages and taxes, and building-science and home-inspection groups for maintenance. Each task links to the pages it’s based on. When sources disagree, we say so or follow the stricter one.
We sort tasks by when they matter, and mark the ones that protect life or prevent major damage as must-dos. Tasks that only apply to some homes (gas, wells, septic, older houses) say so, and you can hide them.
No licensed inspector has reviewed these lists yet. When one does, we’ll name them here and on each checklist.
The buying guides
A task only links to a product when it really needs one. For each product type we start with what matters (safety listings, standards, the features that change the outcome), then pick two to four models: the best for most homes, a best-value pick when a cheaper one does the job, and an upgrade when paying more buys something real.
We haven’t tested these products ourselves. Each guide starts with the strongest evidence we can find: peer-reviewed studies, then government and standards work, then independent measured tests. After that come trade sources, video reviews and owner reports. We treat makers’ claims as claims. When the evidence is thin, the guide says so.
We check each pick for recalls and confirm the exact model on the maker’s pages where we can. Claims link to numbered sources at the bottom of each guide, and a separate check compares the guide’s claims with those sources.
Stores don’t pay to be included, never see a guide before it’s published, and can’t change a pick. We don’t show prices on the page, because they change daily; the button takes you to the store’s current price.

Not professional advice
These checklists are general guidance for U.S. homes. Your local code, lender, insurer or HOA may require more. For gas, electrical, structural or roof work, hire a licensed professional.
