Best HVAC air filter

Which filter to buy for your slot, how high a MERV rating your system can take, and when a portable air cleaner makes more sense.

If you have a 1-inch slot and a newer system, or a technician has checked yours, buy the Filtrete MPR 2200. Published excerpts of Consumer Reports' ratings put it first among 1-inch filters, with strong airflow.1 It's also rated MERV 13, the target EPA recommends if your system can take it. MERV is a filter's efficiency score, and a higher number means it catches more fine particles.2

If you have an older system or a tight budget, buy the Aerostar MERV 11 and change it on time, because in older 1-inch slots a lower MERV changed more often may be the better choice.3 If you have a 4- or 5-inch cabinet, use it, since thicker filters clean better and need changing less often.4 AprilAire cabinet owners should look at the UK313 kit, and owners of generic 4-inch slots should see the filters at the end of this guide.

If smoke or asthma is why you're shopping, put your money into a portable HEPA air cleaner first. In EPA's review, portable units cut particle exposure more consistently than central filters.5

Best for most 1-inch slots

Filtrete Healthy Living Elite Allergen Reduction, MPR 2200 (MERV 13), 1-inch

Good fit if: A 1-inch slot and a system with no airflow trouble

Model MPR 2200

  • Top 1-inch pick in a lab test
  • Strong airflow at both fan speeds
  • Far more pleats than rivals
  • No cabinet work needed
  • About twice the price of Nordic Pure
  • Slightly weaker at the lowest fan speed
  • Technicians distrust it in tight systems
  • Small gain over cheaper charged filters

Consumer Reports gives this filter very good particle removal at high fan speed and strong airflow at both speeds, though it's slightly less effective at the lowest speed.1 It's a standard 1-inch filter, the most common size, so it drops in with no cabinet work.4 Filtrete's site now calls it the MPR 2200 Premium Allergen & Home Pollutants filter, while Consumer Reports still uses the Healthy Living Elite name, so shop by the MPR number and size.1 6

A MERV 13 in a 1-inch slot needs plenty of filter media, and Filtrete's design has about 54 pleats. In Project Farm's bench test of 14 filters, the Filtrete 1900 had 1,560 square inches of media and reached 0.52 inches of water after a flour load. Two MERV 11 filters with less than half the media reached 0.8 and 1.01. Inches of water measure how hard the blower has to pull, and lower is better.7 In another video, a former filter maker measured three new 1-inch MERV 13 filters. Filtrete read 0.17, against 0.22 for Nordic Pure and 0.24 for AIRx.8 Neither video names the 2200, so treat those results as evidence for the design.

The price is the main objection. In one 2021 comparison of six-packs, a Filtrete MERV 13 cost about three times the AIRx and nearly twice the Nordic Pure.8 One HVAC-Talk owner has used this filter for 18 years without trouble, while several technicians there call a 1-inch MERV 13 too restrictive for many systems.9 10 An owner with a gauge found a Costco Kirkland MPR 2200 had about 50 percent more pressure drop than a Filtrete 1500, so the MPR number, Filtrete's own rating, tells you little about resistance.11

Verdict: Buy this if you have a 1-inch slot and a newer system, or a technician has checked the pressure. Skip it if your system already struggles for airflow.

Fine if money is tight

Aerostar Allergen & Pet Dander MERV 11 Pleated Air Filter

Good fit if: older systems or tight budgets

  • Pleated with an electrostatic charge
  • Many sizes, 1 to 4 inches thick
  • Easy to change often
  • Below EPA's MERV 13 target
  • No independent test
  • Some sizing complaints

This is a cheap pleated filter with an electrostatic charge, sold in six-packs in many sizes, and that may be enough.12 In a field study of real homes, charged filters did most of their work at low MERV, so a filter like this may get you much of the benefit.13 A MERV 11 only has to remove 20 percent of particles from 0.3 to 1 micron, though, against 50 percent for a MERV 13.5

Nothing independent stands behind this exact filter beyond a Bob Vila pick for pet homes. Project Farm's Aerostar MERV 8, a sibling, was mid-pack, reading 0.37 inches of water new and 0.74 loaded with flour.7 A lower MERV doesn't guarantee a gentler filter, since the two MERV 11 filters Project Farm tested clogged badly.7

Bob Vila notes that some users report the filters aren't true to size.12 Check the fit, because a loose filter lets air go around it.14

Verdict: Buy this for an older system, or if the lower cost means you'll actually change it on time. If your system can take MERV 13 and your budget allows, the Filtrete is better supported.

For AprilAire cabinets, with no test behind it yet

AprilAire UK313 MERV 13 TriPure Filter + Upgrade Rails

Good fit if: owners of an AprilAire media cabinet

Model UK313

  • AprilAire's named replacement for the 313
  • MERV 13 rating
  • Comes with upgrade rails
  • No independent test
  • Fit and depth need checking
  • Only for AprilAire-style cabinets

A media cabinet is a housing built for a thick filter, and if you own an AprilAire one, this is where the line is heading. AprilAire now calls its 313 filter sunsetting, which means it's being phased out, and it names this filter and rail kit as the direct replacement.15

Nobody has published an independent test of the UK313, so you're relying on AprilAire's rating. AprilAire says it's designed to fit all its 4-inch whole-house air purifiers, and upgraded 6-inch ones, with one-time rails that slide in without tools.15 Its listing shows a shallower filter than the 313, held in those rails, so check your cabinet model against the listing before you buy.16 If you can still get the 313, the model Consumer Reports tested, buy that first.

Verdict: Buy this when your dealer runs out of the 313. Skip it if you don't own an AprilAire-style cabinet.

Only for generic 4-inch slots or odd sizes

Nordic Pure MERV 12 Pleated AC Furnace Air Filter (1-inch and 4-inch versions)

Good fit if: generic 4-inch slots and unusual sizes

  • Thick option for generic slots
  • Charged media
  • Wide range of sizes
  • This MERV 12 is unmeasured
  • Far fewer pleats than Filtrete
  • Build quality is disputed
  • No gentler on tight systems

Buy this for its size range, not its performance. Bob Vila lists a 20x25x4 MERV 12 version, which gives generic 4-inch slots a thick option that AprilAire filters don't fit.15 17 This Old House describes the media as electrostatically charged.18

Nobody has measured this MERV 12, and its siblings did no better than ordinary rivals. Project Farm's MERV 8 read 0.38 inches of water new and 0.73 loaded with flour, and the Nordic Pure MERV 13 in the video above has about 21 pleats against Filtrete's 54.7 8 Build quality is also in dispute. This Old House lists a flimsy frame and says quality has slipped, while a former filter maker gave the MERV 13 top marks for construction.8 18

Don't choose it as a safe fallback for a tight system. DOE reports that all the common MERV 12 filters it tested had over four times the pressure drop of a MERV 2.19

Verdict: Consider it only if you have a generic 4-inch slot or an odd size. For a 1-inch slot, the Filtrete 1900 is better supported.

How to choose

Start with your slot

Copy the size printed on the frame of your current filter. You need one filter for each return-air slot, and some homes have several. A filter should fit snugly without being bent or crushed.2 Air that goes around a filter gets no cleaning, so ASHRAE suggests a piece of tape for a slot that's a bit loose.14

Use a thick cabinet if you have one

Thicker filters usually clean better, last longer and restrict airflow less, because deep pleats spread the dirt over more media.4 20 In Project Farm's test, a 4-inch Honeywell read 0.23 inches of water new and didn't rise under flour.7 One 2009 test found depth mattered less than expected on clean filters, so media area counts for more than thickness alone, and a well-pleated 1-inch filter can come close to a thicker one.21

A system built for 1-inch filters needs a technician to change the slot before it can take a deeper one.19

Aim for MERV 13, but don't overpay for the last few steps

MERV 13 is the lowest rating that must remove at least half of particles from 0.3 to 1 micron, which is why EPA, and ASHRAE in its COVID-era guidance from 2020, point to it when the system allows.2 5 22 DOE's Building America program recommends MERV 8 or higher in new furnaces built for 2- to 4-inch filters, and says that in older 1-inch slots, a lower MERV changed more often may be the better choice.3

The charge in the media may matter more than the last few MERV steps. An electrostatic, or charged, filter holds a static charge that helps it catch fine particles. In decay tests in 21 Toronto homes, median PM2.5 removal was 36 percent for a charged MERV 8 and 16 percent for an uncharged one. PM2.5 is the standard measure of fine particles in air. Going from a charged MERV 8 to a MERV 14 added only 5 to 9 points, and the same filter varied more between homes than different filters did within a home.13 If you have an uncharged MERV 8, that's the one to move away from.

Charged filters generally lost efficiency over three months in those homes, so the number on the box is a best case.23 A study of 50 new filters also found that same-rated filters from different makers often performed differently, so treat MERV as a rough class.24

Find out what your system can take

EPA says most systems can take a MERV 13, but also that systems are rarely labeled with a filter recommendation, so ask a technician to confirm.2 They can measure static pressure, the resistance the blower pushes against, with the new filter in place. DOE says most home systems run well at or below 0.4 to 0.5 inches of water in total, with about 0.1 across the filter as the optimum.19

In 17 home and light-commercial systems in Austin, MERV 11-12 filters cut median airflow by about 4 percent with the fan alone and about 10 percent in cooling, compared with MERV 2, and the energy effect was small.25 In Berkeley Lab's simulations of a new California home, MERV 10 to 13 changed blower energy by under 5 percent against MERV 5.26 So MERV 13 doesn't wreck systems, but one short of return air has less margin. Older PSC blower motors lose airflow as resistance rises, which can freeze an air conditioner coil, and newer ECM motors use more power instead.19 26

Don't put a MERV 16 in a slot not built for it. In the Berkeley Lab study, MERV 16 filters brought noise complaints and about 20 percent more blower energy in some cases, and in two homes they came out within days because of the noise.26 Don't jump to MERV 14 to 16 or HEPA furnace filters in a 1-inch slot without checking with a technician either. If you hear new whistling or the furnace starts shutting off after any filter change, go back to the old filter and call someone.

Run the fan on bad air days

A furnace filter cleans only while the blower runs, and in more than 7,000 homes with smart thermostats that was a median of 18 percent of the time. At those run times, the filter's efficiency matters much less.27 Setting the fan to On raises filtration, and EPA advises it during smoke. It also warns that longer run times raise electricity costs and can make humidity control less reliable in cooling season.2 28

This is also why HEPA-labeled furnace filters are poor value. EPA says most MERV 13 filters are likely to be almost as effective as HEPA filters in these systems, though field studies haven't confirmed that central systems run long enough to improve health.5

Set a schedule you'll keep

ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean or change filters monthly.29 EPA says makers typically recommend replacing them every 60 to 90 days, sooner if the old filter comes out heavily soiled, which works out to about four to six 1-inch filters a year.2 Berkeley Lab found that dirt loading varied more from house to house than by MERV, so let pets and dust set your schedule.26 During heavy smoke, EPA says to change filters more often than the maker recommends.28

For smoke or asthma, add a portable cleaner

Better filtration brings modest health gains. A 2013 review of 16 intervention studies found typical improvements of 7 to 25 percent, particularly in people with allergies or asthma.30 EPA's review found that portable HEPA cleaners cut particle exposure by roughly half or more, while central filtration results were less consistent.5 Use both if you can, with the portable cleaner where people sleep.5 28

Others we looked at

  • Aprilaire Healthy Home 313 MERV 13This is the AprilAire filter that was lab tested. Consumer Reports rates it near the top for dust, smoke and pollen at both fan speeds.1 AprilAire's change interval is 12 months.15 It's being phased out, so buy it while your dealer has it. It fits AprilAire 1310, 2310, 3310 and 4300 cabinets, or other cabinets with a 4898 upgrade kit. Its actual size is 19.58 x 21.38 x 4 inches, so a generic 20x20x4 filter isn't a safe swap.15
  • Filtrete 1900 Maximum Allergen Reduction, 1-inchA strong alternative to the 2200, and the model Project Farm measured. It was Consumer Reports' 1-inch pick in 2022, excellent at high speed and average at low, with strong airflow. A Green Building Advisor owner with a gauge found it had the lowest drop of the store filters in his size.4 7 31
  • AIRx MERV 13, 1-inchThe cheapest of the three MERV 13 filters in the former filter maker's video, though fewer pleats may mean more frequent changes. It's worth a look if your system has margin.8
  • Filtrete Healthy Living Ultra Allergen 4 MPR1550, 4-inchWorth a look for generic 4-inch slots. Consumer Reports in 2022 rated it very good at both fan speeds with nearly unrestricted airflow, at one change a year. Check that this exact model is still on sale.4
  • Honeywell BestAir MERV 8, 4-inchProject Farm's lowest resistance, both new and loaded. It suits generic 4-inch slots if you aren't chasing MERV 13.7

How we picked

We haven't tested these filters ourselves. Consumer Reports' current ratings sit behind a paywall, so what we know of them comes from published excerpts and a 2022 reprint. No one has published pressure measurements for the exact picks here. Project Farm tested siblings with flour, and each video is one person on one rig.

The field studies are small, name no brands and measure particles, not health, and none follows equipment life for years. We have few owner reports on these filters. No filter pick appeared in CPSC's recall database on November 5, 2026.[s33]
