Outdoor faucet covers for the first freeze

What to do to an outdoor faucet before the first freeze, and whether a cheap foam cover is worth adding as a backup.

Buy a Frost King foam cover only as a backup, after the free steps that matter more: take the hose off, close the faucet's indoor shutoff if it has one, and open the outdoor faucet so it can drain.1 A cover adds no heat and can't empty a pipe, and no lab appears to have published a measured test of any faucet cover.2 3

Skip the cover if it never freezes where you live. A frost-free faucet with the hose off doesn't strictly need one either.3 Don't skip it just because your winters are mild, though. Texas and Tennessee were among the five costliest states in State Farm's 2024 to 2025 freeze damage figures, and Georgia topped its 2022 to 2023 list.4 5

Frost King Foam Faucet Cover

Good fit if: standard faucets on a flat wall, after draining

Model FC1

  • Goes on without tools
  • No power or running water
  • Reusable each winter
  • Adds no heat
  • No R-value or temperature rating
  • Needs a flat wall to seal
  • Light foam, thin cord

This is a plain foam dome. A cord loops around the faucet, and a slide lock pulls the gasket against the wall.6 Frost King calls foam its best choice for freeze protection, but that's a maker's claim with no measurement behind it.7 Austin Water lists foam faucet covers in its cold weather advice, and Bob Vila tells owners to fit a faucet protector.8 9

Treat it as insulation whose limit nobody has measured. Frost King gives no R-value, the usual measure of how well insulation slows heat.7 A cover slows heat loss from the faucet, but in prolonged cold everything under it can fall to the outdoor temperature, and it never reaches the pipe inside the wall.3 One review summary lists complaints that the cover wasn't effective below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, without saying how many owners said so.10 Don't count on it in a long deep freeze.

Owner reports are few. In one video a foam cover of unstated brand blew away and its cord frayed. In another, a Frost King foam cover broke after about two years, and the owner moved to the plastic-covered version.11 12

Verdict: Buy this as a cheap second layer for a standard faucet on a flat wall, once the hose is off and the line is drained. Skip it on a stand faucet or a rough wall, where it may not seal. No test shows it beats other covers.

How to choose

Do the free steps first

Take off the hose and anything else on the spout, including splitters and timers.1 3 9 Close the faucet's shutoff valve indoors, which is usually near the faucet in older homes and beside the main water valve in newer ones.1 Then open the outdoor faucet to drain the line. With the indoor valve closed, leave the handle open all winter, as Frost King advises.1

University of Illinois researchers found that ice blocks a pipe first, then pressure builds in the water trapped behind it. In a test on copper pipe in an unheated attic, it rose to about 4,000 psi before the pipe burst.13 14 An open, drained faucet leaves no water sealed in, and a cover can't do that for you.

Check that the line really drained

If little or no water comes out, the line may still be full. Some faucets have a built-in anti-siphon part called a vacuum breaker, and screw-on ones work the same way. Minnesota home inspector Reuben Saltzman warns that these can keep air out, so water may not drain.15

Take a screw-on one off in the fall, or adjust it to let air in. For a built-in one, the maker suggested taking the faucet's bonnet, the housing around the stem, apart with a wrench.15 A cover won't fix a line that's still full.

Find out if your faucet is frost-free

A frost-free faucet has a long tube, and its valve sits inside the warm part of the house. Water in the tube runs out when you shut it, as long as nothing blocks the spout and the faucet slopes down toward the outside.16 Homes built in the past 30 years likely have them, but check yours rather than assume.9 A standard faucet keeps water right at the cold wall, so a cover matters more there.3

On a frost-free faucet, the hose is what counts. A hose left on stops the tube from draining, and the tube can split behind the valve, so almost nothing leaks until the faucet runs again.16 In spring, have someone watch the inside wall or basement the first time you turn it on.17

If you have no indoor shutoff

Then you can't drain the line, and the cover is your only layer. Fit one, and follow your water utility's advice during a cold spell. Austin Water, for example, says to let faucets drip at a trickle during a one or two day freeze.8 Plan on having a plumber add a shutoff or a frost-free faucet.

Finish before the first hard freeze

Unprotected pipes generally start to freeze when it drops to 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside, according to an insurance research group.18 19 That figure is for pipes in buildings, not metal sticking out of a wall in the wind, so treat it as a danger sign and not a safe limit. Faucets on a shady or north side can freeze when the rest of the yard is warmer.9

If you use the faucet during winter, the line refills. Drain it again and put the cover back.9

Don't put heat tape under a cover

Electric heat tape carries a fire risk that a passive cover doesn't. In 1989 the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated some 3,300 home fires a year involving heat tapes or cables, warned against overlapping tape unless the maker allows it, and said too much insulation can cause a fire.20 CPSC also said to insulate over heat tape only if the maker advises it, and then with a non-flammable material such as fibrous glass, so don't put heat tape under a foam cover.20

How many you need

You need one cover per outdoor faucet. Measure each faucet with its handle before you order, since sizes vary by listing, and check whether the listing is for one cover or a pack.2

Others we looked at

  • Frost King Plastic Covered Faucet Protector (FC2)A hard plastic shell over a foam liner, so it's still foam insulation in a tougher case. Frost King suggests it where knocks or animals are a concern. It has no measured advantage against cold.7 21
  • Frost King Padded Sock Faucet Cover (FC3)The better choice for a yard stand faucet or an awkward shape, where a foam dome can't seal. Frost King says it fits regular and stand faucets, and it depends on a snug wrap.2 22
  • Woodford Model 19 freezeless wall faucetA replacement faucet, usually a job for a plumber, and worth asking about if you keep forgetting the hose. It has a pressure relief valve for a hose left on by mistake, but the listing still says the hose must come off in freezing weather.23

How we picked

We haven't tested these covers ourselves, and no lab or consumer group appears to have published temperatures measured inside one. This pick rests on the maker's pages, one retailer description, general advice from a water utility and home sites, a review summary and two owner videos, so the evidence is thin. Nobody knows how much time a cover buys in a freeze. The burst pipe test used copper pipe in an attic, not a hose faucet. State Farm's figures cover freeze damage in general, not outdoor faucets. A search of the federal recall database on November 5, 2026 found nothing for Frost King or its maker, Thermwell.[s34]
