Best smart automatic water shutoff valves
Which device can close your main water valve when a leak starts, who should buy one, and who is better off with sensors.
If your home sits empty for stretches or has plumbing above finished rooms, buy the Moen Flo, install it indoors, and add leak sensors at the appliances. It sits in the main line, so it can catch a burst inside a wall, and it comes in three sizes with an optional battery backup.1 2
Choose the Phyn instead if a moving part worries you and power cuts are rare where you live. If your main has a smooth lever ball valve and appliance leaks are your main worry, the cheaper YoLink kit closes that valve with no pipe cutting.3 4 If you rent or can't reach the main, skip all of these and buy battery leak sensors.

Moen Flo by Moen Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff (1 in)
Good fit if: indoor installs on a 1 in main with Wi-Fi at the valve
Model 900-006
- A true 1-1/4 in model
- Battery backup available
- Only pick with insurer claims data
- Adapters and spacer included
- Power cord can be extended
- Turbine can quit with no alert
- One-year standard warranty
- Erratic low-flow readings in 2019 lab test
- Needs AC power and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
Flo measures flow and pressure in the main line, so it can shut off for a burst anywhere in the house.2 5 Moen says a nightly test can catch leaks as small as one drop per minute.6 Treat that as a best case. In one home's 2021 trial, the test caught a drip every 6.5 seconds and missed one every 52 seconds, and a homeowner blog reports a steady tub drip going unflagged for days.7 8 Even so, the test found a running toilet and a dripping faucet for a five-year owner, and in the 2021 trial it flagged smaller leaks automatically than Phyn did.5 7
Its weak spot is the turbine, the small plastic wheel that measures flow. One landlord found a unit reading zero while guests were using water. The nightly test kept running, but the valve could no longer respond to a burst, and no alert went out.9 Commenters on that owner's videos raise this often, and a second channel and a homeowner blog also report turbine trouble.7 8 9 Moen sent a free replacement part, and the swap is a simple job.9 Check your usage graph every month to confirm it isn't stuck at zero.
Owners are split. The five-year owner likes it, but had to set a daytime override because laundry plus a long shower looked like a burst, and has to power-cycle it when it drops Wi-Fi.5 A plumber on one trade forum reports no trouble with Moen units, while another poster there says contractors have broken its plastic union nut.10 11
Moen dropped its feature subscription in 2020, so core protection needs no plan.12 13 The optional FloProtect plan extends the one-year warranty to five years and adds conditional reimbursement of your insurance deductible, but you must start it in the first year and keep it up without a lapse.14 15
The shutoff itself has no recall, but its old 920-001 battery backup was recalled on April 13, 2023 because it can overheat, with three reports of fires.16 If you have one, unplug it immediately, stop using it, and contact Moen for disposal instructions and a refund. Don't put it in the trash or in a store's battery recycling box.16 Don't buy a used one. The current backup is the 920-008, and it runs the unit for up to 4 hours.1
Verdict: Buy this if you want burst protection and can install it indoors. Check the usage graph every month, because a dead turbine sends no warning.
Phyn Protect
Good fit if: accurate water-use data and no moving parts in the sensor
Model PHYPF011
- No turbine to fail
- Steadier low-flow readings than Flo in 2019
- Two-year warranty with no plan
- No subscription
- Can't close in a power cut
- Auto Shutoff unavailable at first
- Adapters not included
- Cord can't be extended
Phyn uses an ultrasonic sensor to measure flow, so there's no turbine to fail.7 17 A 2019 test at Utah State's water lab backs up the meter, on earlier Phyn Plus units. On a weighed test bench at 0.25 gallons per minute, where 100 percent is a perfect reading, three Phyn units read 97.19 to 101.04 percent. Three Flo units read 0, 87.57 and 123.05 percent. The unit that read 0 was a first-generation model, and Flo says it later improved low-flow metering.18 At 2 and 15 gallons per minute, both brands stayed within about 3 percent, so either meter is good enough for a burst.18 The test measured metering and not leak catching, so buy Phyn on this result only if you want accurate usage data at trickle rates.
Power is the bigger trade-off. Phyn has no battery backup. When the power fails, it holds its last position and can't close, so you'd have to close it by hand with the included tool.17 19 If outages are common where you live, choose Flo.
Expect a slow start. Auto Shutoff stays off until Phyn has logged 700 water events, or 1,000 in homes with fixtures such as irrigation or a water softener, and it becomes available after 21 days at the latest.20 After that, how fast it closes depends on your home's usage history and your alert settings.
Phyn Plus is now sold as Phyn Protect. Phyn says you get the same monitoring and leak protection with a new name and updated look, though its FAQ also mentions updated product specifications.17 21 The lab test and owner reports here all come from Plus units, so read them as a guide to the Protect and not as proof. A store listing for Phyn Plus (2nd Gen) is the older label. The warranty is listed at two years, but Phyn says terms depend on the product, so confirm them before you order.14 19 21
Adapters aren't included.17 Cord length needs checking too. Phyn's product page asks for an outlet within 12 feet, its Protect FAQ lists a 4.2 foot outdoor-rated cable, and its help page gives 11 feet for the 2nd Gen Plus. The cord can't be extended, so measure the one in the box before anyone cuts pipe.14 17 21 22
The owner record is thin. The No More Leaks channel ran Phyn units for years and praises its plumbing check logs, and one forum poster calls it a very good system.7 11
Verdict: Buy this over Flo if the turbine worries you and power cuts are rare. Skip it if you need protection during an outage.
YoLink Wireless Valve Controller and Bulldog Valve Robot Automatic Water Leak Detection and Shut-off Kit (hub included)
Good fit if: DIYers with a smooth lever ball valve who mainly fear appliance leaks
Model YS-H15001-BDOG-HD
- No pipe cutting
- Noticeably cheaper than an inline valve
- May close with no internet
- Two owners report no failures
- No flow sensing
- Won't fix a stiff valve
- No usage history or nightly test
- Relies on the included hub
This kit is a different kind of product. A motorized robot clamps onto your existing lever valve and closes it when a paired sensor reports water.3 4 It has no flow meter, so a leak where no sensor sits goes unnoticed, and you get no usage history or nightly leak check.3 4 Buy it to protect appliances, and put a sensor everywhere water could escape.
Everything depends on your valve. YoLink's manual says the robot can't correct mechanical problems in the ball valve, and a motor may stall on a stiff one.23 24
Check the box before you count on it in an outage. A third-party description of YoLink's Valve Controller 2 says it runs on AA batteries through a power cut, and that a directly paired sensor can close the valve with no internet.4 This kit's part number points to a different controller, the X3, so confirm which controller you're getting and how many sensors come with it.
It costs noticeably less than an inline valve, even before the plumber's bill.3 Owner reports are few. On one forum, one owner reports more than four years on a Bulldog robot and another over a year on YoLink's high-torque robot, with no failures.25
Verdict: Buy this if you have a smooth lever ball valve and want automatic shutoff for appliance leaks. Skip it if a hidden pipe burst is what worries you.
How to choose
Decide whether you need one
Water damage and freezing made up 22.6 percent of US homeowners insurance losses in 2023, at about 1.5 claims per 100 policies a year, and the average paid claim is far above the price of any valve here.26 Think of a shutoff as extra insurance against a small yearly chance of a large bill.
It pays best where a leak would run unseen for hours or days: a second home, frequent travel, a finished basement, or bathrooms over living space. A sensor that only beeps helps when someone is home.3 Fix common failure points first, such as washing machine and water heater connections.27 Skip the plug-in models if you get frequent power cuts, unless you plan on a battery backup.
Don't expect a 96 percent drop in claims
That number comes from a LexisNexis study that compared 2,306 homes with Flo to a control group, reported as 1.3 million homes. Water claims fell 96 percent and severity fell 72 percent, while the control homes rose 10 percent.28 29 It's a correlation built on data Flo supplied, and the Flo homes had far worse claims than the control group before they installed.28 30 People often buy after a loss, and a bad run tends to fall on its own.
A Moen-written article cites 81 percent fewer claims and 85 percent lower severity, and adds that those customers may have had earlier water losses.31 So expect a real reduction of unknown size. None of this shows that Flo beats Phyn or YoLink, because no comparable claims data exists for those two.
How many you need: one valve, plus sensors
You need one valve on the main, sized to the pipe, and you should pair it with leak sensors at the water heater, washer and sinks. Flow logic alone can be slow. In one home's trials, Phyn let 274 gallons run at a known hose bib, yet flagged an unfamiliar shower at 19 gallons. An early Flo let 464 gallons run over 68 minutes in 2019, and the owner says that later improved.7
A wet sensor is much faster. In the same home, a Phyn sensor closed the main within 14 seconds.14 Ignore the claim that Phyn stops a catastrophic leak in 60 seconds, which appears with no test behind it.32
Check your main valve first
Close and open your main fully by hand before you buy anything. Ball valves left in one position for months can seize.24 If yours sticks, or it's a gate valve, have a plumber replace it. A clamp-on robot shouldn't go on a bad valve, and an inline job needs a working shutoff anyway.
For an inline unit, ask for a separate shutoff ahead of the device, which makes later replacement easier.8 11
Match the pipe, the outlet and the Wi-Fi
Measure your main before you order. Flo comes in 3/4 in (900-001), 1 in (900-006) and 1-1/4 in (900-002), and the pick here is the 1 in model, which is the wrong size for the other two mains.2 The No More Leaks channel says the 1 in model is a 3/4 in body with 1 in connectors, so only the 1-1/4 in is truly larger.14
Phyn says it fits mains up to 1-1/4 in, but the same channel says its valve is a 3/4 in design and wouldn't go smaller than the pipe, because that can reduce pressure.14 17 If your main is larger than 1 in and your pressure is already low, ask the plumber first. Phyn's site also lists Protect XL models for 1.5 and 2 in mains, which this guide doesn't cover.17
Flo works only on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and won't join networks that use WPA3, a newer Wi-Fi security setting.33 Check the signal at the install spot before anyone cuts pipe. Inline units are generally plumber jobs, although a handy owner can do it.34
Know what happens with no internet
Without internet, Moen says Flo may still shut off, but you get no alerts and can't control it remotely.35 Phyn's Offline Leak Protection covers catastrophic leaks only, with no alerts, as long as the unit has power and the feature is on. After an offline shutoff, you must restore the water at the unit.36
Plan for surprise shutoffs
A valve that closes on its own can cause its own trouble. Phyn tells owners to confirm that water softeners, reverse osmosis filters and irrigation can handle having no water.36 If you have a hot water boiler, ask your heating tech about a low-water cutoff, which shuts the boiler down when its water runs short, as one hydronics trainer suggests.10
Install indoors if you can
Heat looks like the main threat to these units. The No More Leaks channel went through four Flo units from April 2019 to September 2020 and four Phyn units from November 2020 to September 2023 on a hot, south-facing wall in Arizona. A later Flo installed indoors ran three and a half years and was still working.14 37 Phyn rates the Protect IP55, a dust and water spray rating, for indoor or outdoor use, but if your water line comes in outdoors in a hot climate, be cautious with any of these.21
Ask your insurer before you choose
Some insurers work closely with particular brands, so confirm that yours qualifies before you buy.14 Chubb customers get a discount on Phyn hardware, though Phyn's page says that implies nothing about coverage, and one Flo owner reports a premium discount.5 38 One trade poster's list of systems that New York insurers commonly accept leaves YoLink out.11
Others we looked at
- FloLogic System 3.5Its battery runs the system for up to 7 days without AC power, far longer than Flo's backup, and it detects flow from about half an ounce a minute, according to the maker. A new unit costs well above Flo, and it needs a check valve and an expansion tank. It suits large homes with outage worries and a bigger budget.14 39 40
- Flume water monitorIt straps onto your water meter and has no valve, so it can only alert you. It was among the most accurate devices in the 2019 Utah State test, after an adjustment to two of the three units. It suits renters who want alerts with no plumbing work.18
- Dome water main shutoffTwo owners on one forum report trouble: one says the motor couldn't keep turning the valve, and the other had unrequested shutoffs and incomplete closes.25 41
- LeakSmart and BuoyLeakSmart reportedly went out of business in 2024, and Resideo's Buoy was discontinued in 2021. Any app-based valve carries that risk, so favor brands with active support.14
How we picked
We haven't tested these devices ourselves. We found no independent test of how well current models catch leaks, no peer-reviewed work on home shutoff valves, and no failure rates. The picks rest on one 2019 lab test of flow metering on earlier hardware, press summaries of insurer data on Flo, maker documents, three YouTube channels and a few forum posts.
Much of the leak trial data comes from one home, partly from 2021, and the apps have changed since. That channel buys its own units but earns money from a Moen discount code. The YoLink evidence is the weakest, with no lab test and no long-term data, and the controller in this kit is unknown.
Phyn says many homes with wells use its units, but how Flo behaves on a well, how either behaves with home fire sprinklers, and what the Flo valve does in a power cut with no backup are unknown, so ask your plumber if any of that applies to you.[s8] CPSC checks on November 5, 2026 showed no recall of the Flo shutoff itself, Phyn or YoLink.
