How to update your license, car registration and voter registration

An envelopeMove-in

Change the address on your driver's license soon after moving, because state deadlines can be as short as 10 days. California and New York give you 10 days, and Texas gives you 30. Update your vehicle registration and voter record in the same sitting, and tell your auto insurer where the car is now kept.

Records to update when you change address on driver's license

This is three separate government records plus one private one. Your license and vehicle registration usually sit with a DMV or similar agency, though your state may split them. Your voter registration is handled by election officials. Your auto insurer needs to know where the car is kept.

None of them learn about your move on their own. New York says outright that USPS doesn't tell the DMV. Forwarding won't reliably fix that either, since USPS says senders may block forwarding of licenses and voter documents. Your renewal notice or new card could go to the old house.

How long to change address on license after you move

Do it the week you move in. The clock usually runs from your move, not from closing. If you're also buying a car, or your registration is about to renew, handle the address first so documents reach the right place. For voting, check your deadline as soon as you move, and not only before an election. Moving to another state? Plan an in-person visit, since a new license generally can't be handled like a simple address change.

Other states set their own deadlines and fees. Search your state's DMV site, and treat these as examples only. Fees change, so confirm before you pay.

How to update address on license, car and voter record

  1. Find your state's page

Go to your DMV's official site and note the deadline, the form and whether you can finish online.

  2. Gather what you need

Have your license, plate number, new address and any proof of address your state requests.

  3. Update your license

Submit the change and save the confirmation. Pay only if your state charges or you want a new card.

  4. Update each vehicle

Change the registration address for every car, trailer or boat, even if the license update didn't ask.

  5. Update your voter record

Pick your state at vote.gov, then register or change your address as it directs.

  6. Call your auto insurer

Give the new garaging address and ask how it affects your premium. Ask for a bundle quote with your home policy.

  7. Check the mail

Watch for new cards or stickers. If your state issues a new card, carry the confirmation until it arrives.

DMV change of address and voter rules by state

Almost everything here depends on your state, including what you'll carry afterward. New York says you don't need a new document. You can write your new address on your license and on the front of your registration, and a replacement is optional. California's DMV page says the update is free, and it doesn't say a new card is required. Some states bundle the license and registration update, and others don't, so read the page closely.

Voter rules vary as well. Moving within a state may take a simple form, or your state may ask you to re-register. If you move to a new state, you must register there. Most states accept the National Mail Voter Registration Form, but New Hampshire, Wyoming and North Dakota don't. Registration deadlines differ, so look up your state on vote.gov.

Change address on car registration and other missed steps

  • Updating only the license. In New York, the duty covers vehicle records too, and traffic ticket addresses are a separate update.
  • Title records. In New York, a registration change updates the title record, but only if the names match exactly. Don't write on the title itself.
  • Look-alike sites. Search results can show private sites charging extra. Check that the address ends in .gov or is your state's official domain.
  • Your old garaging address. Rates depend partly on where the car is kept, and your policy should show the right place. Ask your insurer how to update it, and ask about a home and auto bundle while you're on the line.
  • Assuming your old voter registration moved with you. Cancelling it generally isn't required, but your local election office may have a form.

Questions about voter registration after moving and your license

How long do I have to change my address on my license?

It depends on your state. California and New York require it within 10 days, and Texas within 30. Check your own DMV's site for the rule that applies to you.

Do I need a new license when I move?

Not always. New York says you can write the new address on your card and that a replacement is optional. Other states issue a new card, sometimes for a fee.

Does updating my license update my voter registration?

Don't assume so. Voter registration has its own process, and you must update it when you move. Start at vote.gov and confirm your record with your local election office.
