Best cordless drill
Which drill to buy for shelves, curtain rods and anti-tip straps, which battery line to commit to, and when you need hammer mode.
For most homes, buy the DeWalt Atomic DCD794D1. It's a small drill with a brushless motor, and in GearLab's timed runs of 17 drills it was the pick for most people. It ran about twice as long on a charge as an older DeWalt with a smaller battery and about the same list price.1 2 3
If you want Ryobi's yard tools on the same battery, start with the Ryobi ONE+ kit. If you only hang pictures and build furniture and money is tight, the Black+Decker will do. Get the Bosch only if you drill brick, block or concrete. If you already own batteries from a major brand, buy that brand's bare tool, without a battery or charger.

DeWalt ATOMIC 20V MAX Brushless 1/2-in Drill/Driver Kit
Good fit if: shelves, curtain rods, furniture and the odd big hole
Model DCD794D1
- About twice the DCD771C2's runtime per charge
- Under half its big-hole time
- About 2.5 inches shorter
- Brushless at about the same list price
- Only one battery in the kit
- Stopped short on a long lag screw
- Half the big-hole speed of the Milwaukee
GearLab bought its drills at retail and timed them on the same jobs. This one cut a 5-inch hole saw through a door in 21 seconds and got through 8.5 cycles of the endurance test, where each cycle is three holes and 16 screws. The older DeWalt DCD771C2 took 46 seconds and managed just over four.1 2 3
It's also small. At 5.9 inches long and 3.2 pounds, it's as short as Milwaukee's 12V drill.1 3 4 It stopped a quarter inch short of flush on a 5-inch lag screw, which matters only if you drive a lot of those thick framing screws.3
Check the box before you pay. DeWalt lists one 2.0 Ah battery in this kit, while GearLab's review text mentions a pair of 1.5 Ah packs. Ah means amp-hours, a rough measure of how long a battery runs.3 5
Verdict: Buy this if you want one drill that covers nearly every job in a typical house. Skip it if you already own another brand's batteries.
Ryobi ONE+ 18V 1/2-in. Drill/Driver Kit
Good fit if: buyers planning a mower, trimmer or blower on one battery
Model PCL206K2
- Battery fits 300-plus Ryobi products, per Ryobi
- Two batteries in the kit
- Two speeds, unlike the Black+Decker
- Similar Ryobi last in a torque test
- Bits can loosen in the chuck
- Plastic chuck and brushed motor
- No belt clip or tool bag
Buy this drill for the battery. Ryobi says the ONE+ line covers more than 300 products, and homeowners on Reddit often choose it for that reason.6 7
It's fine on wood, but heavy work is another matter. Project Farm's similar brushed Ryobi, rated at 500 inch-pounds, reached 131 on a lag bolt, the lowest of eight drills, and smelled hot under load.8 A House Digest writer got a far higher 552 inch-pounds from this exact model with a torque wrench, so the test method seems to matter a lot. He also had bits fall out until he tightened the chuck firmly by hand, as the manual instructs.9
Several Reddit owners are happy with Ryobi sets at home, and one apprentice found a Ryobi weak at work but fine for homeowners.7 10
Verdict: Buy this if you'll add Ryobi yard tools. Skip it if you expect big holes or long lag screws, and look at the brushless Ryobi below.
Black+Decker 20V MAX Cordless Drill/Driver
Good fit if: picture hanging and furniture assembly
Model LDX120C
- Among the lowest prices on the market
- Coped with 2-inch holes in pine
- 11-position clutch and LED light
- One speed, 650 RPM
- One 1.5 Ah battery
- Slow to recharge
- Sibling model smoked on heavy work
This is a small-jobs drill. It handled every bit Bob Vila's team tried except the largest auger, and the battery ran out at about 25 minutes.11 A 2014 video reviewer read 3 to 4 hours for a recharge in the manual, so one flat pack can stop a job for the afternoon.12
Its close relative, the LD120VA, is a fair warning. In GearLab's heavy tests it smoked and smelled of burning plastic, and it couldn't turn a 1-inch spade bit through lumber.1 13
Owners on Reddit split. One calls it great for hanging and fixing things but says to look further for a deck, and one spent six years with a Black+Decker that wouldn't hold a charge.7 A Hacker News commenter threw out Black+Decker tools when replacement batteries couldn't be found.14
Verdict: Buy this if you only hang art and build furniture. If deck screws or big holes are coming, spend more now.
Bosch 18V Compact 1/2-in. Hammer Drill/Driver Kit
Good fit if: homes with brick, block or concrete walls
Model GSB18V-65B12
- Very small for a hammer drill
- Kickback control, per Bosch
- Carrying bag and belt clip included
- Straight-shank bits slipped in the chuck
- Only one 2 Ah battery
- No side handle in the kit
- Light masonry only
Hammer mode adds a rapid pounding action to the spin, which helps the bit break up brick and concrete. Bosch lists this drill at 2.5 pounds and 6.9 inches, while the DeWalt hammer drill in the same Bob Vila roundup weighs 4.1 pounds.11 15 Bob Vila's team named it Best Overall.11
The weak spot showed up on the masonry work this drill is for. A straight-shank bit slipped in the chuck three times, so buy bits with three-flat shanks.11 Bosch's contents list shows no side handle, so add one if it will fit. Bosch says its KickBack Control reduces sudden twisting when the bit binds, but nobody has tested that independently.15 For repeated concrete work, you want an SDS rotary hammer, a heavier tool built for that job.16
Verdict: Buy this if your walls are brick or block and you want hammer mode in a light tool. For wood and drywall, you'd pay for a feature you won't use.
How to choose
Pick the battery family first
Batteries fit only their own brand line, so this choice outlasts the drill.6 7
Go with 18V class unless you only do light work
Twelve-volt drills are lighter but gave up real capacity in GearLab's runs. They took 40 to 201 seconds on the 5-inch hole saw, while the best 18V-class drills took 11 to 21. A 12V drill still handles picture hanging and furniture.1
Take brushless when it costs about the same
Brushless motors use electronics in place of the carbon brushes in older motors.17 The top four drills in GearLab's table are all brushless, but GearLab also says a brushed drill is plenty for occasional use.1 2 Nobody has measured motor life across home drills, so treat long-life claims as theory.
Ignore the big numbers on the box
"20V MAX" means 18 volts nominal, as DeWalt says in its own footnote. DeWalt's UWO rating isn't torque, so you can't compare it with a torque claim from Ryobi or Bosch.18
Torque ratings don't rank drills either. In Project Farm's 2025 test on a 10-inch lag bolt, a Milwaukee rated at 1,400 inch-pounds reached 455. A Ridgid rated at 1,250 reached 203, behind a Ryobi rated at only 750, which reached 263.19
The clutch is the numbered ring that makes the drill slip at a set force, so you don't strip a screw. A high count proves little: GearLab's LD120VA had more than 20 positions and still couldn't get a lag screw halfway in.1 13
Look at charge time and battery size
Measured charge times in GearLab's table ran from 23 to 230 minutes, and the slowest were the cheapest drills.1 One larger pack can match two small ones. The Atomic did about twice as many cycles on its 2.0 Ah pack as the DCD771C2 did on a 1.3 Ah pack.1 2 3
Buy hammer mode only for masonry, and plan for the dust
A compact hammer drill suits a few anchors in brick or block. A full-size hammer drill or right-angle drill makes a poor only drill, because Bob Vila's team found them heavy for everyday screwdriving.11
Drilling masonry makes silica dust, and breathing it over time can cause silicosis and lung cancer.20 A 2026 study of an hour's hammer drilling into concrete found personal exposure fell 87.6 percent with built-in extractors and 93.3 percent with an external vacuum and shroud.20 If you'll drill more than a couple of holes, buy a drilling dust shroud, use a HEPA vacuum, and clean the holes with the vacuum as well.21 Empty the dust bin outdoors and wear a respirator while you do it.20
A jammed bit can also break your hand. Doctors in the United Arab Emirates reviewed 43 construction workers with the same spiral hand fracture after drill kickback, typically when the bit lodged suddenly in concrete. They tie the injury to a one-handed grip. Keep both hands on the drill and use a side handle if you can fit one.22
Don't buy a no-name drill from a marketplace listing
In October 2024, CPSC told owners of AILUKI drills, sold online from 2020 to 2024, to stop using them. It had nine reports of the drills exploding, igniting, melting, smoking or overheating, including one burn injury, and the maker didn't answer its requests. If you own one, stop using it, pull the battery and take it to household hazardous waste, not a store recycling box.23
Buy from a brand with a real recall process, however good a listing's star rating looks. Big names have had recalls too: about 1.7 million Harbor Freight Drill Master drills in 2015, 455,000 Ryobi HP 1802M drills in 2010 and several DeWalt models in 2007, all for overheating. If you own an older cordless drill, look up its model on CPSC's recall list. CPSC's database showed no recall of any drill in this guide in November 2026.24 25 26
Others we looked at
- DeWalt DCD771C2It's still a very good screw driver, and it sank the 5-inch lag screw fully, but GearLab ranked it fifth of 17 and would usually pick something else unless it was on sale.2 Its 1.3 Ah packs ran out at about 20 minutes of heavy use in This Old House's test, and it has no battery gauge or belt clip.2 27 This Old House's Most Durable label came from a small test with no durability check.27 GearLab calls the motor brushed, even though DeWalt's page says brushless.2 18 Buy it on sale if you want two batteries in the box.
- Ryobi ONE+ HP PBLDD02K1The better Ryobi for heavy jobs. It ranked fourth of 17 at GearLab with a 17-second hole saw time, but it costs more than the PCL206K2 and weighs 3.9 pounds.1 28
- Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2903-20GearLab's top scorer for drilling and driving, with an 11-second hole saw time. It weighs 4.2 pounds and costs more, so it suits serious DIY work better than shelves and curtain rods.1
- Craftsman V20 CMCD700C1Worth a look if the Black+Decker feels too small. GearLab scored it 61 against 46 for the LD120VA, and it has a 1/2-inch chuck, at a higher price.1 29
How we picked
We haven't tested these drills ourselves. The picks rest mainly on GearLab's timed runs, which come from one outlet and appear to use single samples, plus maker specs, editorial reviews, YouTube tests and owner comments. The Black+Decker and Bosch have no independent measured test. No peer-reviewed or government data exists on drill durability, motor life or battery life by brand, so nobody can say which of these lasts longest. Recalls count reports, not failure rates, so they can't rank brands. The dust and hand studies covered workers, not homeowners setting a few anchors, but the same precautions apply.
