Best basic tool kit

How to pick a small kit of full-size tools for first-year repairs, look past the piece count, and know what to add on day one.

For a first home, buy the Stanley 94-248. Its hammer, pliers and screwdrivers are close to the size you'd buy on their own, and that matters more than the number on the box, because 54 of its 65 pieces are bits, sockets and hex keys.1 2 3 Buy a pair of ANSI-approved safety glasses with it, since the contents lists for these kits don't show any.3 4

If you rent or want a spare for a kitchen drawer, get the Apollo DT9706. The Black+Decker drill kit is the last choice, and only for small jobs. If you already own a hammer, tape measure, screwdrivers, pliers and a level, skip the kits and buy single tools for the gaps.

Stanley 65-Piece Homeowner's Tool Kit

Good fit if: first-time owners starting with almost nothing

Model 94-248

  • Hammer drives real framing nails
  • Slip-joint and long-nose pliers
  • Metric and SAE hex keys
  • Best tool quality in Reviewed's comparison
  • No adjustable wrench
  • Eight sockets, imperial only
  • Reviewers disagree on the tape
  • Case has no room for extra tools

Two reviews that used these tools both ranked this kit first, for the same reason: the tools are close to real size. Bob Vila's team drove an 8d framing nail into a 2x4 with this hammer, which it couldn't do with the smaller hammers in other kits.1 Reviewed rated each tool the best of the kits it compared.2 The hammer head weighs 13 ounces. One owner suggests 16, and one YouTube reviewer says 12 is all most people need.5 6 7

There's no adjustable wrench, and the eight sockets are imperial only, from 5/32 to 3/8 inch, so Bob Vila calls the kit unsuitable for home mechanics.5 Only the hex keys come in both metric and SAE sizes, so flat-pack furniture with metric bolts may need those keys or a small metric set.3

Bob Vila's reviewers say the 16-foot tape feels cheap and noticeably low quality, while Reviewed calls it good quality.1 2 5 Stanley's page lists a full lifetime warranty, but Reviewed reported a limited one-year warranty in 2022, so read what comes in the box.2 3

Verdict: Buy this if you're starting from scratch, and add an 8-inch adjustable wrench and safety glasses. Skip it if you mostly work on cars or a mower.

Fine for a drawer, not a whole house

Apollo Tools 39-Piece General Tool Set

Good fit if: renters, light fixes and spare sets

Model DT9706

  • Case fits a kitchen drawer
  • Comfortable screwdriver handles
  • Precision screwdrivers for electronics
  • Scissors cut thick cardboard
  • Small hammer
  • Small tools suit light jobs only
  • Some buyers say it feels cheap

This set is built for small jobs, and it does those well enough. Bob Vila's team found the tools as durably made as those in many pricier kits, and the interchangeable screwdriver drove larger wood screws.1

Size is the limit. The small hammer restricts you to finish nails and picture hangers.1 Reviewed didn't try this set, but it found that the 8-ounce hammer in Apollo's larger DT9408 bounced off nails, so treat that sister kit as a warning.2 This Old House's summary of buyer reviews is split: some owners say the tools lasted for months or years, and others call them cheap or smaller than expected.8

Verdict: Buy this for an apartment, or as a second kit for the kitchen drawer. Skip it as your only tools in a house, because the small hammer will limit you.

Last choice, for small jobs only

Black+Decker 20V MAX Drill & 68-Piece Home Tool Kit

Good fit if: someone who wants one box for small jobs and accepts light hand tools

Model LDX120PK

  • Only pick with a drill
  • Includes an adjustable wrench
  • Comes with bits and hole saws
  • Light- to medium-duty 20V drill
  • One small battery
  • Phillips screwdriver too big for standard screws
  • 10-foot tape

The appeal is one purchase, and that's about all. Black+Decker lists a top speed of 650 RPM and one 1.5 Ah battery.9 Bob Vila rates the matching LDX120C as a light- to medium-duty drill, and its battery died near 25 minutes in testing.10 Bob Vila's team bored a 1-inch hole through a 2x6 with the kit's drill, but GearLab couldn't drill even one 1-inch hole with the sibling LD120VA, and that drill smoked on a hole saw.1 11 They're different models and tests, so treat this as a drill for small jobs.

Many of the hand tools suit only light work because of their size.1 A few Lowe's reviewers also call the wrench and pliers small.12

Verdict: Buy this only if you want one box and your jobs are small. For most new owners, the Stanley plus a separately chosen drill from our cordless drill guide is the better purchase.

How to choose

Count the real tools, not the pieces

Stanley's own list for the 94-248 shows 30 bits, 8 sockets and 16 hex keys, which leaves 11 other items.1 3 Bob Vila notes that the 322 pieces in one set include cable ties and blades, and some of its handles felt undersized.1 Ignore the number on the box and look for the core tools: a claw hammer, a tape measure, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, hex keys, a level, needle-nose pliers and a utility knife.1

Judge the handles in your hand

A NIOSH and Cal/OSHA booklet gives sizes for tools used with force: a handle 1 1/4 to 2 inches across, and plier handles at least 2 inches apart closed and no more than 3 1/2 inches apart open. It also favors spring-loaded plier handles and a soft, non-slip coating.13 Those numbers were written for people who use tools all day, so treat them as a comfort check.

Buy safety glasses with any kit

A 20-year study of US emergency department records looked at 2,967 hammer injuries to the head, face, eye, mouth or ear, and 63.6 percent happened at the patient's home. Debris from hammer strikes was the most dangerous cause: those patients were admitted 7.6 percent of the time, against 2.5 percent for the rest.14 A better hammer won't stop flying debris.

More than 78 percent of people hurt in eye injuries weren't wearing eyewear. The American Academy of Ophthalmology estimates that protective eyewear could prevent 90 percent of these injuries, and it urges every household to own at least one ANSI-approved pair.4 15

Know what to add next

If your kit has no adjustable wrench, add an 8-inch one, a size Bob Vila says handles most jobs.1 A drill is the next purchase, and our cordless drill guide covers that. If you measure often, buy a 25-foot tape. Stanley's 25-foot PowerLock reached nearly 10 feet before bending in Bob Vila's test.16

Decide between a kit and single tools

Owners on Reddit split on this. Several say to buy a basic set and replace each tool with a better one when it wears out, and one argues against any kit unless you'll use all of it soon.17 18 One YouTube reviewer builds a 10-tool starter set from single tools, at several times the cost of the Stanley. His rule for tight budgets is to buy cheap and upgrade what you use a lot or break.7

If you work on cars or a mower, none of these picks fit. Look at a socket set such as the Crescent or DeWalt below, and add a hammer and a tape.1

Choose the case for your storage

Molded plastic cases hold up to abuse better but can be bulkier. Fabric cases are harder to clean, though they compress to fit into tight spaces.1

Check any Stanley hammer you already own

In November 2019, CPSC and Stanley Black & Decker recalled about 211,000 Stanley 16 oz wooden handle nailing hammers, model STHT51454, sold only at Walmart, because the molded grip can come loose. Stanley had one report and no injuries. If you own that model, stop using it and return it to Walmart for a refund as a gift card.19

In April 2023, about 2.2 million fiberglass sledgehammers were recalled because the head can detach, including Stanley FATMAX models of 3 to 10 pounds. The Stanley model number, starting FMHT, is on a sticker on the handle. Check it against CPSC's list, stop using a listed hammer and contact Stanley Black & Decker for a refund.20 Nothing ties either recall to the 94-248 kit.

Others we looked at

  • Crescent 180-Piece SAE/Metric Professional Tool SetA socket-centered set with comfortable screwdrivers, but it comes with no hammer or tape measure.1
  • DeWalt DWMT73802 142-Piece Mechanics Tool SetBob Vila's choice for cars, with sockets, drivers and wrenches but no general household focus.1

How we picked

We haven't tested these kits ourselves. We found no measured comparison of tool kits for the home from a lab, university or standards body, so the picks rest on editorial reviews, maker contents lists and a few owner comments. The evidence for the Apollo and Black+Decker is thinner than for the Stanley, and we don't have long-term owner reports or failure rates for any of them. The hammer study doesn't compare brands, and the 90 percent eyewear figure is an estimate. We found no recall of any kit in this guide as of November 5, 2026.
