Rekeying your locks after you move in

Which rekey kit fits the locks on your doors, and when a store, a locksmith or a new lock makes more sense.

If your Kwikset locks have a small slot beside the keyway (the opening the key goes into), buy the Kwikset SmartKey kit, unless the seller left you the tool and a spare key. If they have no slot, buy the Prime-Line E 2400. For Schlage locks with the C keyway and five pins, buy the Prime-Line E 2402. Rekeying changes which key opens a lock without replacing the lock, and the kit you need depends on the hardware already on your door.1 2 3 4

All three kits need a working key, so if you don't have one, call a locksmith. Replace any lock that's worn or damaged instead of rekeying it. If handling tiny pins sounds unpleasant, take the cylinders to a store that offers rekeying.3 4 5 6 7

Kwikset SmartKey Security Re-Key Lock Kit

Good fit if: kwikset SmartKey locks, if you have a working key but no tool

Model REKYG-KIT-CP-SMT-KW

  • No disassembly, unlike the pin kits
  • Can match a Kwikset key you own
  • Temporary keys for contractors
  • Repeat as often as you like
  • Works on SmartKey locks only
  • You may already own the tool
  • A slip can misprogram the lock
  • Worn key copies can fail

A SmartKey lock has no pins to swap. You stand at the open door with the current key, the tool and the new key, and Kwikset says the job takes seconds.1 5 SmartKey works with KW1 keys, Kwikset's standard key type, so you can set the lock to a Kwikset key you already carry, which neither pin kit can do.2 3 8 Use a factory-cut or code-cut key, as Kwikset recommends, because a worn key or a poor copy can fail.8

Look through what the seller left before you buy. Kwikset says the tool comes in all SmartKey packaging, so with that tool and a spare key you may not need the kit at all.1 Retailers list this kit with four everyday keys and two alternate keys for temporary use, which are useful for a contractor or a short-term guest.9 10

The rekey can go wrong, and then neither key works. Kwikset blames a key that wasn't fully inserted, or one that was pushed, pulled or tilted while turning, and its instruction sheet says some failures need a reset by a hardware store or locksmith.2 8 11 Forum owners mostly call the job quick and simple, but a Locksmith Ledger writer says the small parts failed regularly.12 13 One forum locksmith says forcing a misaligned bolt with the key breaks these locks quickly, so fix a binding bolt first.14

Verdict: Buy this if your Kwikset locks have the slot and you can't find the tool. It's the easiest of the three by a wide margin, and it does nothing for any other lock.

For Kwikset locks with no slot

Prime-Line Kwikset-style 5-Pin Re-Keying Kit E 2400

Good fit if: kwikset 5-pin locks with no slot beside the keyway

Model E 2400

  • Covers up to six locks
  • Color-coded pins, nothing to measure
  • Far cheaper than a locksmith visit
  • Sets locks to the kit's key only
  • Useless on SmartKey locks
  • Small parts, real care needed
  • Warranty excludes installation damage

Go by the slot, not the age of the lock, because some basic Kwikset locks still use pins.15 One store reviewer bought this kit for new Kwikset locks and found it useless, since those locks had no pins.16 Prime-Line says one kit handles up to six locks, which is enough for most homes.3

Prime-Line's video shows three keys, pins, tweezers, a removal tool, a follower (a small rod that holds the pins in place while the core of the lock slides out) and a sheet matching pin colors to your key, so you don't have to read key cuts.3 17 The downside is that you get the kit's key, because the pins work only with the keys in the box.3

Plan on real work. The lock comes off the door, and knobs need extra steps.17 Prime-Line's video runs about 15 minutes for one deadbolt and one knob. Owners took longer: one needed about an hour for four locks, another about 20 minutes a lock at first, and a third estimates three to four hours for eight locks with store kits.12 17 18 19 On Lock Picking 101, members named dropped top pins and knob cylinders as the hard parts.20 The one-year warranty excludes damage during installation.3

Verdict: Buy this for Kwikset locks with no slot, if you're comfortable with small parts and happy to use the kit's key. Skip it if you want to keep a key you already carry.

For Schlage C-keyway locks

Prime-Line Re-Key A Lock Kit, Schlage Type C 5-Pin, E 2402

Good fit if: schlage C-keyway 5-pin locks, once you've checked the lock series

Model E 2402

  • Covers up to six cylinders
  • Color-coded pins in similar kits
  • Three pre-cut keys included
  • Doesn't cover every Schlage lock
  • Sets locks to the kit's key only
  • Top pins can spring out
  • One report of wrong contents

This is the same idea for Schlage: up to six cylinders set to the three pre-cut keys in the box.4 It's only for C-keyway 5-pin locks. Schlage has more than one keyway, so one lock-picking YouTuber advises trying a kit key in the lock before you take anything apart.21 Schlage's own manual also uses different steps and tools for different locks, including a cap removal tool for B-Series deadbolts and extra parts for keypad locks.22 Prime-Line's instruction sheet does cover Type C deadbolts, unscrewing the cylinder cap with a wire tool, but it doesn't mention keypad locks.23

The danger is the top pins. Schlage warns that they can spring out of the cylinder unless you move the follower through in one continuous motion.22 A YouTube walkthrough of a similar six-lock Schlage kit went smoothly, with color-coded parts and nothing to measure, but the presenter is an experienced lock picker, and he warns that pulling the key too early can shoot the pins out.21 Reloading them is the step one forum locksmith doubts homeowners can manage.20

Owner reports are few. One forum owner found store kits easy on Schlage and Kwikset locks, and a Fine Homebuilding reader said inexpensive Home Depot kits worked for both.12 24 One Lowe's reviewer got a kit labeled for Schlage that held Kwikset keys and wrong pins, so check the keys against your lock first.25

Verdict: Buy this for Schlage C-keyway locks once you've checked your series. If you have a keypad lock, or a cylinder cap won't come off with the kit's wire tool, take it to a store or locksmith.

How to choose

Decide whether a rekey is the right job

Rekey when the locks work well and you want old keys to stop working. In federal survey data from 2003 to 2007, offenders used a key in 8% of no-force entries at empty homes, while 40% came through an unlocked door or window.26 So a rekey closes a real route for little money, but locking every door and window matters more.

Replace a lock that's worn, damaged or outdated, or when you want a stronger type of lock.6 One owner paid a locksmith to rekey four doors on a 20-year-old house, then replaced everything anyway because the locks were worn.12 Turn each key and throw each bolt before you spend anything. Clear the garage door opener's remotes when you move in, too.27

Read the lock face and test every key

A Kwikset lock with a small slot beside the keyway is a SmartKey lock. Without the slot, it's usually a 5-pin lock that takes a pin kit.2 28 Schlage needs its own kit, because Kwikset and Schlage pins differ.24 Prime-Line also sells kits for Titan 6-pin and Weiser 5-pin locks, and the kits aren't interchangeable.3 4

Try every key you were given in every lock before you buy. All three picks need the current key.3 4 5 Without one, call a locksmith or replace that lock. The tools for lost-key jobs don't come in a homeowner kit.28 29 30

How many kits you need

Buy one kit per lock brand. One Prime-Line kit covers up to six locks of its type, and Kwikset says there's no limit on SmartKey rekeys.1 3 4

If you want one key for the house, a home with mixed Kwikset locks has a likely route: pin the older locks to the kit key, then set the SmartKey locks to that same key. No source documents that exact combination, so try it on one lock first.2 3 8 Kwikset and Schlage locks can't share a key with these kits. Allegion, which owns Schlage, says that takes a conversion kit and a locksmith.31

Choose between a kit, a store and a locksmith

A kit is a cheap route if you're comfortable with small parts. Owners on Reddit and other forums report rekeying whole houses and saving a lot, though people who finish tend to say so and locksmiths get called for the failures.12 18 19 Do one lock at a time, so a mistake can't shut you out of every door.

The middle option is to pull the cylinders and take them to a store. Some Ace stores list a rekey service and owners report the same at some Home Depot stores, but offerings differ, so call first.7 32 A locksmith costs the most. Bob Vila describes a service call plus a charge per lock, which adds up to several times the price of a kit in most homes.33

A pin kit makes your old keys stop working, but it doesn't give you a unique key. Neither Prime-Line nor Kwikset says how many key patterns it uses, and one lock-picking forum member who bought a similar kit online found barely any variation in pin depth.20 If you want a key that no other kit buyer could own, have a store or locksmith do the rekey.

Fix the strike plate while the door is open

Rekey with the door open and make sure it can't swing shut, as Kwikset instructs.5 Keep the old key until the new one has turned smoothly several times.

A new key does nothing against a kicked door. Consumer Reports swings a 100-pound steel ram at locked doors, and its test engineer says failure usually comes from the short screws holding the strike plate, the metal plate on the frame that the bolt slides into. Too many locks ship with 3/4-inch screws.34 35 Wirecutter's experts called a reinforced strike the most cost-effective upgrade, so add longer screws or a reinforced strike on the same afternoon.36

That matters more than the debate over SmartKey itself. Kwikset says its deadbolts pass the UL 437 pick test, but a security researcher forced one open in under a minute with hand tools in a video CNET described, noisily and with visible damage, and four locksmiths told Wirecutter they preferred a Schlage deadbolt.15 36 37 If your SmartKey locks work well, rekeying them is reasonable.

Others we looked at

  • Kwikset 83335 SmartKey Rekey KitA retailer lists this as four keys cut alike and a steel tool. It does the same job as our pick without the temporary keys, so it's a fair substitute.38
  • Schlage 40-132 keying kitSchlage says it covers its most popular knobs, levers and B-Series deadbolts, with a key gauge and cap removal tool. You choose pin sizes yourself, so it suits someone who rekeys often.22
  • CLK Supplies pin kitsThese are loose assortments of pins and springs, not a fixed set for one key, so they suit hobbyists more than most homeowners.39
  • Prime-Line E 2404 and E 2401These are for Weiser 5-pin and Titan 6-pin locks, with the same limits as the other Prime-Line kits.4
  • Schlage B60N deadboltThis is a lock, not a kit. If your locks are worn, this Grade 1 deadbolt, Wirecutter's top pick, is a stronger step than a rekey.36

How we picked

We haven't tested these kits ourselves, and no lab, Consumer Reports test or Wirecutter review covers any consumer rekey kit. The pick here depends on your locks, not on a quality ranking. The advice rests on maker instructions, trade writing, how-to videos and a modest number of owner reports. Nothing measures how often SmartKey rekeys fail or how many key patterns kit makers use. The federal burglary figures are about 20 years old, cover no-force entries only and don't say whose key was used. Consumer Reports tests deadbolts, not kits, and its results here come from news reports.
