Best video doorbells

Which doorbell fits your wiring, your winters and your smart home, and how much of it you'd have to pay a monthly plan to use.

If you have doorbell wiring and use Google Home, buy the Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 3rd Gen). It keeps your wired chime, never needs recharging and has security updates promised until at least October 2030.1 2 Budget for a plan if you want more than short previews.

Buy the Eufy E340 instead if you won't pay a monthly fee or have no doorbell wiring. Buy the Ring Wired Doorbell 2K if you use Alexa, want the lowest upfront cost and can give up your old chime. Buy the battery Nest only if you need Google, have no wiring and get mild winters. Whichever you choose, buy it to see who's at the door and keep a record. No independent study shows that a doorbell camera cuts burglary.3 4 5

Best for Google homes with wiring

Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 3rd Gen)

Good fit if: google Home households with doorbell wiring

Model Not listed by outlets

  • No battery to recharge
  • Works with your wired chime
  • Keeps more free than Ring
  • Can record nonstop on the top plan
  • Short previews only without a plan
  • No local storage
  • Needs a suitable transformer
  • One-year warranty

This is the Nest to buy if your wiring suits it. Google specifies 2K video in a square frame that shows more of your porch than the battery model. Because it runs from the doorbell transformer, the box that steps house power down for the doorbell, it has no battery to fail in the cold, and it's rated to -4°F.2 6

What you get free is the catch. With no plan, you get up to six hours of event previews of up to 10 seconds each, and PCWorld's reviewer said it isn't all that useful without a subscription. Thirty days of history needs the Standard plan, and 60 days or nonstop recording needs Advanced. One year of Standard costs more than a Ring Wired Doorbell 2K.2 7 8

Pay for the longer history, not for the AI. PCWorld's reviewer liked Gemini, Google's assistant, while Gizmodo's called its summaries useless. Both saw pets labeled as the wrong animal.8 9 Night vision is black and white out to 10 feet unless the porch has light.2 8

A YouTube owner who mounted this beside the battery Nest found the picture crisper, with a bigger gain at night than by day, and face detection told his two sons apart more often. A doorbell press reached his Nest Hub display in 3 seconds, against 9 on the battery model, which he puts down to the wired power. One tip from him: press the doorbell onto its mount until it clicks before you screw it in.10

Verdict: Buy this if you use Google Home and have a suitable transformer. Skip it if you won't pay for a plan, or if you don't use Google, because something cheaper with local storage will serve you better.9

Best if you refuse a monthly fee

Eufy Video Doorbell E340 (Dual Cameras)

Good fit if: avoiding monthly fees and watching package deliveries

Model T8214111

  • Saves clips with no plan
  • Second camera sees packages
  • Spare battery swaps in
  • Works with your old chime
  • Wired units may keep draining
  • No microSD slot in the doorbell
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
  • No HomeKit
  • No published update date

The E340 saves clips to 8 GB of storage inside the doorbell at no charge, and a second camera looks down at the spot where packages sit.11 Eufy says 8 GB holds about 90 days at 30 short clips a day, and Reviewed repeats that figure, but nobody has confirmed it.11 12 The doorbell itself has no microSD slot. To add storage, you'd buy a HomeBase S380 or eufy's MiniBase chime, which takes a card, though one owner on eufy's forum couldn't tell whether clips reached it.11 13

Wired power is the repeat complaint. Doorbell wires charge this battery and don't replace it. In two long threads on eufy's forum, at least four owners describe wiring trouble, such as batteries that kept falling, units that fell back to battery, or a doorbell that died until it was charged by USB. Two others say theirs work well on 24 volt transformers.14 15 16 Eufy lists 8 to 24 volts and more than 10 VA, but one owner's battery kept draining on a new 24 volt, 10 VA unit, and the app told another to change to a 16 to 24 volt, 30 VA transformer.11 14 15 If you wire it, expect that you may need a stronger transformer.

The removable battery is useful if you have no wiring, because you can charge a spare indoors and leave the doorbell on the wall.11 Eufy doesn't publish a cold limit for this model, though, so don't assume it will get through a hard freeze.

Verdict: Buy this if you want no monthly fee, or you have no wiring and don't use Google. Skip it if you want to wire it and leave it alone, or if you use Apple Home.

Lowest upfront cost for Alexa homes

Ring Wired Doorbell 2K (2nd Gen)

Good fit if: alexa homes with doorbell wiring that can do without the old chime

Model Not listed on Ring's product page

  • Ring's lowest-priced wired model
  • Under half the wired Nest's list price
  • Square head-to-toe view
  • Longest update promise here
  • Doesn't ring a mechanical chime
  • Can't rewatch video without a plan
  • Little independent testing

Decide about your chime first. Ring says this doorbell doesn't support mechanical chimes, so the old box in your hallway goes silent and you need an Echo or Ring's plug-in Chime instead.7 The 2K Plus below comes with a kit that makes a sound at the chime box, but that kit replaces the old chime's job. If the old chime itself has to ring, buy the wired Nest or the E340.

The low price is only part of the cost. Ring says its doorbells work without a plan, but you can't rewatch recorded video unless you pay.7 17 Its square view shows more of the ground near your door than Ring's older wide frame.7 18 19

Police can ask owners in an area for footage through Ring's Community Requests program. Ring calls this voluntary, and you can ignore requests. Its face recognition is opt-in.20 If any of this bothers you, leave those features off or choose another brand.

Verdict: Buy this if you live in Alexa and accept a plan as the price of saved video. Skip it if your old chime has to ring.

Only for Google homes with mild winters

Google Nest Doorbell (Battery)

Good fit if: google homes with no wiring and mild winters

Model Not listed by outlets

  • Installs with no wiring
  • Free person, animal and package detection
  • Led a 2022 side-by-side test
  • Update promise has already ended
  • Won't charge below 32°F, even wired
  • Lower resolution than the wired Nest
  • Shortest battery life in that test

It runs on its built-in battery. Optional doorbell wires charge it and ring your chime, but not below 32°F. Below that, it runs on what it has left, down to -4°F, and a long freeze can leave it dead until you bring it indoors.6 21 Cold is the clearest complaint from owners. In early 2022, long forum threads from cold regions described batteries draining in as little as a day and some units shutting down while wired, and Google then confirmed the limit.21 22

Google's five-year promise of security updates ended on August 24, 2026. Its table still shows updates arriving, but you have no guarantee for the future.1 The Google Store also sells it at the same price as the wired 3rd gen, with a far lower-resolution picture and a narrower view.2 6

It does perform well in mild weather. In one 2022 side-by-side test, it placed first among battery doorbells for motion detection, recording and daytime video. It also recharged most often, every 33 to 35 days, against 60 to 71 days for the eufy 2K in that test.23 A YouTube reviewer who hung one beside a Ring battery model found the Nest's picture clearer despite Ring's better specs.24

Verdict: Buy this only if you need Google, have no wiring and rarely see a freeze. Otherwise a wired Nest or the E340 is the better buy.

How to choose

Expect a record, not protection

Don't pay more for a doorbell or a plan because of crime claims. Ring claimed a 55% burglary drop in a Los Angeles neighborhood. A later LAPD analysis found a 21% fall from the year before, or 42% after adjusting for rising burglaries nearby, and the LAPD wouldn't share its full method. In West Valley City, Utah, burglaries fell 41% in the area given doorbells and 50% in the neighboring comparison area.4 NBC News asked 40 police agencies in 2020, and none collected data on whether their Ring partnership had any effect.5 Those trials were small, so they don't prove the effect is zero, but deterrence is unproven.

A review of 40 years of CCTV research found larger effects from cameras someone actively watches than from passive ones, and nobody watches your doorbell live.25

Packages are a better case. A 2026 study in Crime Science surveyed 309 people recruited online who said they had stolen packages. On a 5-point scale, seeing a doorbell camera scored 4.54 for how likely it was to stop them, a locked porch box scored 4.38, and a camera sign 4.03. People who had stolen four or more times were less deterred.26 That's what paid survey takers said, not what they did at real doors. Still, mount the doorbell where people can see it from the walk, and consider a lockbox for valuable deliveries.

Read your transformer before you choose

Find the rating printed on your doorbell transformer. VA (volt-amps) is how much power it can supply. The wired Nest needs 16 to 24 volts AC at 10 to 40 VA.2 27 If yours falls short, buy a new transformer with room to spare.

Think about winter before you buy a battery model

If you have hard freezes and no wiring, skip the battery Nest. Google offers an indoor power adapter that can run the wired Nest with no doorbell wires, though a wired chime won't work with it.2

Check what happens to your old chime

The wired Nest and the E340 work with a standard wired chime. The Ring Wired Doorbell 2K doesn't support mechanical ones, and the 2K Plus comes with a small kit that mounts above the chime box and takes over from the old chime.2 7 11 28

Match your phone and speakers

Google's doorbells need the Google Home app and a Google account, and Ring ties into Alexa.2 7 If your home is already full of one brand's speakers, stay with that brand.24 HomeKit is the hard one. Eufy says the E340 doesn't support it, and neither Google's nor Ring's spec pages list it. The Aqara G410 does.2 7 11 29

Check the update date, and avoid no-name doorbells

Look up the date for security updates before you buy, and check any doorbell you already own. Google and Ring both publish theirs, and eufy doesn't.1 30

Buy from a maker with a track record. In February 2024, Consumer Reports found security holes in a dozen nearly identical doorbells sold under names including Eken and Tuck through major retailers such as Amazon and Walmart, all run through the Aiwit app. An attacker could take over a doorbell by pairing with it, and images could be reached with only a serial number.31 If a doorbell uses the Aiwit app, stop using it.

Secure the account on day one

Use a password you use nowhere else and turn on two-step sign-in. A big brand name doesn't protect you. In 2023 the FTC charged that Ring let employees and contractors reach customer videos, that one employee viewed thousands of recordings of female users, and that hackers reached about 55,000 US customers' accounts and used two-way audio to harass people.32 Those charges cover conduct from about 2017 to 2019, not Ring's security today.

If you moved into a home with a doorbell already on the door, reset it or replace it so it isn't left on the previous owner's account.

Don't read "no plan" as "private"

"Local" and "no plan" are cost terms, not privacy promises. In early 2023 Anker, the company behind eufy, admitted that streams to eufy's web portal weren't end-to-end encrypted, after marketing its privacy. It said it had fixed this.33 In February 2026 the FBI said investigators recovered video from a disconnected Nest doorbell with no subscription by pulling residual data from backend systems.34 Don't assume any of these doorbells keeps everything on your own network.

How many you need

One per main entry door is enough. Skip this guide if your building has a managed intercom, or if you don't want a cloud-connected camera at your door.

Others we looked at

  • Ring Wired Doorbell Plus (formerly Video Doorbell Pro)This is an older 1080p model that Ring's current doorbell page no longer shows, and it's easy to confuse with the 2K Plus.18 19 Its promised updates end two years sooner than the Wired Doorbell 2K's, on December 31, 2029.30
  • Ring Wired Doorbell 2K Plus (2nd Gen)The Ring to choose if you want a wired sound indoors. It includes a Chime Kit Mini that mounts above your chime box and replaces the old chime's job, so don't count on the old chime itself. Ring lists it at slightly less than the wired Nest, with 2K video, but you lose video history without a plan, and Nest gives you more for free.19 28
  • Reolink Video Doorbell WiFiA no-fee alternative for wired homes. Reolink lists 2560 x 1920 video, a microSD slot up to 256 GB and no required plan. You supply the card. It comes with its own plug-in chime, and Reolink says it can also wire to an existing mechanical chime.35
  • Aqara Doorbell Camera Hub G410The one to look at for Apple Home, with HomeKit Secure Video and a microSD slot in its chime. HomeKit recording needs a paid iCloud plan. Its low IPX3 weather rating means you should mount it under an eave.29
  • Blink Video Doorbell (2025)Cheap and easy to set up, according to Reviewed, but saved clips need a subscription after the trial.12
  • Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), recalledCheck any older Ring you inherit with the house. CPSC recalled about 350,000 of this separate model, number 5UM5E5, in November 2020 as a fire hazard, because the battery can overheat when the wrong screws are used for installation. Ring had 23 reports of doorbells igniting and eight of minor burns. Only certain serial numbers are covered. The number is on a label on the back of the doorbell. If you have this model, stop installing it, check the number with Ring's website or app, and contact Ring for revised instructions.36

How we picked

We haven't tested these doorbells ourselves. No independent lab has published measurements of latency, detection accuracy, video quality or lifespan for any current model, and there's no long-term data on the 2025 and 2026 models. The picks rest on maker specifications, a few editorial reviews by single reviewers, one measured 2022 comparison of older battery models, owner forums and YouTube reviews. The Ring Wired Doorbell 2K's details come from Ring, not from an independent test. Much of the crime evidence is journalism about small trials that weren't randomized.
